Chef Taro Arai Accepts a Challenge from his Little Brother at Mikuni Sushi Judgement Day

SACRAMENTO, CAMikuni Kaizen will host Judgement Day, a sushi battle between chefs Kotaro “Taro” Arai and Naomichi “Nao” Arai. Guests will blind taste recipes to decide which will make it onto the Mikuni Fall menu. This event will be Tuesday, September 11,from 6:30 p.m. to8:30 p.m. at Mikuni Kaizen located in the Fountains at Roseville.

Judgement Day will allow guests to witness the brotherly rivalry between Taro and Nao Arai, both experienced sushi chefs, who have very different opinions about what people like at the sushi bar. Participants will enjoy four courses, featuring eight recipes, all paired with sake. “We will be preparing simple, traditional Japanese recipes,” said Taro Arai, Mikuni co-owner. “Nao and I often disagree over what dishes will do well with our guests. So we’ll just see whose recipes they like more.” Attendees will be asked to score each dish and at the end of the night the winner will be announced.

This event will also serve as a benchmark for new items to introduce on the specials menu at Mikuni locations this Fall. “Our chefs have lots of ideas and we can’t add everything to the menu and train ninety chefs across eight restaurants and remain consistent,” said Nao Arai. “We hope to get as much guest feedback as we can.”

Mikuni has made reservations available for media to attend this event. Seating is limited, and this event is already sold out, but a rematch is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, October 23rd at Mikuni Roseville on Eureka Road.
