Mikuni Restaurant Group to Join in Disaster Relief Through the American Red Cross

SACRAMENTO, CA – Mikuni Japanese Restaurant & Sushi Bar will start fundraising today to aid the relief effort for Japan. The Mikuni “Rescue Roll” will be offered to guests for $12 ($16 at the Mikuni location in Northstar Resort), with 100% of sales going to the American Red Cross. In addition, Taro Arai’s autobiography, Abundance: Finding the American Dream in a Japanese Kitchen, which retails for $25, will be sold with 100% of sales going to the relief effort. Both fundraisers will go through the end of the month, March 31, 2011.

Mikuni CEO, Haru Sakata, who has family outside Tokyo, is amazed how quickly America responded and was personally touched by the show of support from Mikuni guests, vendors and the media through phone calls, emails, and comments posted on the Mikuni corporate Facebook page. “I am deeply moved,” Sakata stated simply. Many Mikuni employees have friends and family who live in affected areas and remain concerned as the aftermath of this tragedy unfolds.

With six restaurant locations in the Sacramento region, one in Truckee and one in Colorado, Mikuni hopes to sell 1,000 rolls and raise a minimum of $12,000. To launch the effort, Executive Chef, Daniel Schmoock, quickly rallied the Mikuni sushi chefs and revamped the popular Mikuni Michi Roll and added a twist: Panko shrimp, crab salad and cream cheese inside with slices of avocado and seared tuna outside, all topped with a special Mikuni sauce, torched and garnished with unagi sauce and tempura bits.

Mikuni is also working to collaborate on a special event, but is working out the logistical details. More details will follow.
